Environmental
issues are at the very heart of our club. We endeavour
to support action that encourages a sustainable use of our environment
for the benefit of all Cantaburians. CFFC proudly supports the Water
Rights Trust (www.waterrightstrust.org.nz) , an
organisation dedicated to upholding the equitable rights of present and
future citizens to clean, viable waterways.
CFFC is a foundation member of Water Rights
Trust. One of our members Murray Lane is
a Trustee of the Water Rights Trust, and along with other CFFC members,
attend meetings and assisting in the running of the Trust. The entire
CFFC membership thanks these members wholeheartedly for their
involvement in preserving our waterways.
In particular, the Trust is established: "to restore,
maintain, protect, and enhance fresh surface and groundwaters, in
Canterbury, and also in other parts of New Zealand as the Board may
decide, whether on its own account or in conjunction with any other
person or persons, for appreciation and recreational enjoyment by
present and future generations." Click here

waterways in Canterbury.
Help us support
the conservation of your waterways by becoming a member of the

Environmental News in Brief and CFFC in
Action:
Record Low water
levels in Canterbury
Prepared by Environment Canterbury,
Thursday, 29 September 2005
Groundwater levels throughout much of the
Canterbury Plains continue to be at very low, and in many cases, record
low, levels. Read the full report here.
URGENT NOTICE from Fish and
Game (3/10/05)
The Mararoa, Waiau River and other rivers have been closed to fishing
since the discovery of Didymo algae. This algae is an unwanted organism
under the Biosecurity Act 1993 and has the potential to smother a river
bed. Its spread could seriously affect the health of South Island
rivers and its trout fishery. It is an offence to fish in these closed
rivers and heavy penalties apply. For more information click here.
Lowland Streams Fail The clean Green Water
Test. Read the report by SIMON COLLINS (3/07/04)
An article from the NZ Herald 2nd July 04, highlights the dreadful
plight of lowland streams found in research conducted by NIWA. With the
free-holding of the river flats in the high country there is the
potential to destroy these in the same way as many of the land-use
controls under their High-country Leases will be removed. Until Plans
are firmly in place to ensure the high-country water-bodies are
protected they are in danger.
The Hurunui River debate has
reopened.
Canterbury Regional Council (CRC) asks the public to decide on a new
flow regime. With it comes renewed interest in dams and a greater
divide between would-be abstractors and recreational groups.
Lynton Dairy application
The Hearing Panel has DECLINED the Lynton
Dairy application to take 560 litres per second, (that is more than
half the average domestic use per second for Christchurch.) from the
deep 230 metre aquifer in Te Pirita to service a 3000 cow dairy
operation.
